A big question I get asked a lot is “should we do a first look or a first touch?” One of the crucial decisions you have to make as a couple is the moment when you will first see each other on your wedding day. While both are romantic, it’s essential to find out which one suits your preferences. Here I’ll lay out the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches to help you make an informed choice!

A First Look
A first look is a private moment shared between you and your partner where you see each other before the ceremony begins. Typically, you stage this moment with a photographer and/or videographer to capture reactions and emotions.

Advantages:

• You get to spend some quiet time with your partner before the chaos of the ceremony begins.
• It calms your nerves and helps you relax!
• You can take all your wedding photos before the ceremony which shortens your photo session later, but don’t worry – we’ll still capture those dreamy golden hour moments later!
• You get to enjoy your cocktail hour with all of your guests!

Disadvantages:

• First looks can take away some of the charm of walking down the aisle as it’s no longer the first moment you see each other on the day.
• It may seem too rehearsed and lacks spontaneity.
• Some couples may feel like they’re breaking tradition, which could be a deal-breaker.

A First Touch
A first touch is similar to a first look but without seeing each other. You stand on either side of a door, wall or even back to back while holding hands, and saying a prayer or exchanging personal vows. Some couples even use this time to exchange gifts.

Advantages:

• You feel connected with your partner even though separated.
• It’s time-efficient – it doesn’t take long to plan.
• You can have a private moment and enjoy the anticipation of seeing each other.

Disadvantages:

• It may not be as ‘grand’ of a moment as a first look.
• Some couples may find it difficult to connect without seeing each other.
• It could heighten nerves and leave you feeling more anxious to be with your partner than before.

Personally, I am pro first look but ultimately, the decision is all yours and I’m here to support whichever decision you make! You’ll need to look at your wedding timeline, venue, personal choice, traditions, and style to choose the perfect way to see each other for the first time on your special day. Discuss it with your wedding planner, photographer, and videographer, and you will be sure to make the right decision! Remember, whichever way you choose will be magical and memorable because this is your day and it’s all about you!
